Contests

Contests are a great way to market your company, but almost anyone will tell you that you have to obey state and federal laws while you’re holding that contest. What you may not know is that if you don’t obey the laws involved, it could become a serious problem for your company.

A Costly Example

In 2007, a Sacramento radio station held a contest called “Hold Your Wee for a Wii.” Participants involved were to drink as much water as possible without urinating. Contestants were given eight-ounce bottles of water and instructed to drink them every fifteen minutes. As time went by, contestants were given even larger bottles of water to drink. One woman died of water intoxication in the process. In 2016, the FCC decided to put the station on trial to decide whether their license should be renewed because of the incident. While cases like these are typically held in civil court, this one is unique, but it can happen.

Avoid This Problem

There’s so much more to a contest than that initial idea. No matter what happens in this court case, the reality is that you have to conduct your contests legally and carefully. Ignorance of the law is never an excuse, especially when there are professional companies like ESG ready to help you carefully craft your upcoming promotion.
